When Sleep Won’t Come

So, you understand why sleep is important, and you really do want to make an effort to maximize its benefits. Nothing is going to change until you do.

One of the most common complaints I hear from patients is that they wake up at night and can’t get back to sleep. This isn’t too surprising, considering that some have dismal bedroom habits. I can think of one patient whose spouse watches TV after bedtime. The partner of another one insists on sleeping—all night—with the television on, so this patient is dealing not only with light, but sound. These patients are being compromised by darkness deprivation. Melatonin, that hormone your brain produces in response to darkness, helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms and, thus, with sleep. Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production, and that’s what happens with many of the people in my practice. Look around your bedroom at night and ask yourself if too much light is contributing to the quality of your sleep. And by all means, do keep your phone entirely out of the bedroom.
